Music is a vital part of our life together.
During worship, we sing traditional and contemporary hymns, using the New Century Hymnal of the United Church of Christ. This inclusive, modern hymnal provides multi-cultural hymns, inclusive language for God, a variety of liturgical resources, and songs for every season and occasion. Nathaniel Coleman, our organist, accompanies congregational singing on organ or piano. Many people remain following the Benediction in order to enjoy Nathaniel's superb postludes on our new organ.
The Covenant Choir sings most Sundays from September to June. The Celestial Ringers Handbell Choir performs monthly from September to June. On Sundays when the choirs do not perform, special music may take the form of solos, ensembles, performances by youth or church members, or special musical presentations of many types. Once a quarter, The McKay Creek Band, comprised of members of the congregation, performs bluegrass/old time style music.
Children’s music takes many forms. Junko Gilliland leads singing with the children in Sunday school, and regularly shares their music with the congregation in worship. Joy Chimes (Ellen Green, director) provides an entry level experience of hand bell performance for children as young as first grade. Praise Ringers (Ellen Green, director) allows children to continue progressing in their hand bell proficiency. All children’s music groups receive opportunities to perform during worship services.
